Starbucks is brewing a new marketing plan with wine and beer offerings

June 28th, 2010 by chelsea

Starbucks is considering expanding its brand from fine-brewed coffee by adding a repertoire of sophisticated, locally sourced beverages.

One of the coffee chain’s undercover stores–15th Ave. Coffee and Tea–plans to add wine and beer from Pacific Northwest vineyards and local brewers this fall. These changes accompany the store’s renovations, which include an indoor-outdoor fireplace.

Coffee has always been the mainstay of the chain, but its latest offerings and marketing initiatives with breakfast sandwiches and, more recently, VIA have emphasized the fast-paced lifestyle. Fine wines and hand-crafted beers appear to re-emphasize the brand’s long-standing value of fine quality.

Famed Portland barista unveils cafe, bar fusion

March 11th, 2010 by chelsea

A new Portland cafe is serving up coffee and beer — but don’t expect to order PBR or a simple drip.

That’s because Billy Wilson, owner of “Barista” and award-winning local coffee guru, sees sophistication and complexity in these beverages and plans to sell nothing less, according to an article in The Oregonian. Wilson is a former-home brewer with a reputation for success, snatching the U.S. Barista Championship title last March.

“Barista” will supply espresso from fine roasters and local beers with character. Oh, and “coffee-flavored stouts” to boot.

“The majority of people who like high-quality coffee also like high-quality beer. If you’re really selective about coffee, you’re super picky about beer. I love beer. I drink more beer than coffee,” Wilson said in the article.

We’ll drink to that!

Portland encourages pedaling at bike month celebration

May 11th, 2009 by cameron

Flat tires and greasy chains will accompany Portland commuters at Pioneer Courthouse Square this Tuesday to observe National Bike Month in May.

A broken bike is no excuse for Portland’s Bureau of Transportation (PBOT), who is offering commuters free bicycle inspections and adjustments to get more people to bike to work this week, according to an article in The Oregonian.

Free coffee, tea and bagels will also be provided for those who bike as an incentive by PBOT. A list of the month’s activities, which include bicycle clinics with presentations about laws and regulations for cyclists, routes and flat tire repair instructions, can be viewed at the City of Portland’s Website.

It’s a wonder what else free coffee and bagels could get this city do.
